Although I knew how it happened, I don't recall any conversations where it would have come up.
Someone was telling me how slick it would be today after getting down to 15 overnight. I told them if the rain/mist stopped in time, the roads would be mostly clear from evaporation and they looked at me like I had 2 heads. LOL

Yes this happens in freezing temperatures when the air is dry the ice evaporates bypassing the liquid stage turning into vapor The process is called sublimation, this is how snow disappears even if the temperature never gets above freezing.

The one thing I remember from school and everybody else knows it to. I thought I would try to feel smart once but it has never happened yet. I gotta keep trying or I will have to admit I'm stupid ( Dont need anyone's help with that).

Snow sublimation is a loss of water from the snowpack to the atmosphere due to the direct phase transition of snow to water vapor. Sublimation can occur from a static snow surface, and is enhanced under drifting and blowing snow conditions. Several studies have shown the importance of sublimation to the water balance in the Arctic (Box and Steffen, 2001), Antarctic (Van Den Broeke, 1997), Canadian Prairies (Pomeroy and Li, 2000), and alpine areas (Wagnon et al., 2003; Strasser et al., 2008; MacDonald et al., 2009, 2010; Bernhardt et al., 2012; Gascoin et al., 2013; Marks et al., 2013; Vionnet et al., 2014; Zhou et al., 2014). Snow mass losses due to sublimation have been estimated to vary between 0.1 and 90% of total snowfall (Strasser et al., 2008; MacDonald et al., 2010; Groot Zwaaftink et al., 2013), depending on model approach, location and period of observation.

It's great to observe curious things of this sort.....Another one that jumps out at me is the formation of lines of foam on large lakes on windy days.

I expected our roads would be pretty much dry this morning, but they weren't/aren't. Still a lot of ice. My wife barely got up our driveway a little while ago, and it's not steep at all.

How ice evaporates? lol
Several people I talked to in the last few days didnt know ice will evaporate in the extreme cold dry air outside. It was kinda funny the looks I got.
This is an inexact science. The science isn't inexact, but the circumstances are inexact. It's like trying to explain why hot water freezes more quickly than cold water. It's subject to lot's of variables. It's amazing in theory, but it's quite possible that people will go out there sliding around on the road with a car load of children. LOOK OUT!
