Going to try my hand at fly fishing.

looking for a 5wt 9’ setup (maybe others) interested in other fly gear also.

I’ve never fly fished, so beginner and budget gear preferred.

My fly fishing Sensei taught me a long time ago- the fish doesn't know if you are using a $2000 Sage setup or a cane pole with the line wound around a tin can. I started with a $39.95 Zebco Combo from the Stroud outlet mall that got blown away in the tornado 25 years ago. He gave me the following advice:

Go to Bass Pro or Cabelas. Pick the cheapest 9 5wt COMBO they have. A lot of times they will run specials online. Make sure the combo has the line and backing. Use it as a beginner's rod. It should be easily under $200. Don't get caught up in money. Yet....

If you like it, then you can spend hundreds/thousands in gear like I did. If you don't like it, you aren't out a lot. I will give casting lessons for free if you would like. I mean, it's not completely free, you will have to buy me a cup of coffee.
The highlight of my life- fast forward to 2018, Gunnison River in October. I guided my son to this fish. I had given him the rod in the picture for his birthday the week before. He tied the fly that he caught the fish on. Although I will fish for the rest of my life and I've caught bigger fish, this is the only one I remember.

You need to try bass fishing with the fly rod. It's a heck of a lot of fun, and much more available locally than trout. Now, I'm going to reveal myself as a true Okie. The most fun I've ever had landing a fish was a 7 pound carp on a fly rod. If you want to try for bass, you may want to look at a 7 weight rod, which would still be good for trout fishing.

I just got into fly fishing myself. There is a company called lively legs. Livelylegs.com they do YouTube videos. They offer a starter kit for $189 Rod/reel line and a case to put it into. I plan on buying one. I am using a flea market setup and I used my buddy’s setup and really liked it. The newer stuff is way better than my old junk.

I use to have a couple of old bamboo fly rods I picked up at an estate sale years ago. They were a lot of fun and I caught a few blue gill with them but the most exciting thing I ever hooked was me. Those little hooks in the neck are not fun.

I was told by some salty old flyfishermen in Colorado that bass fishing on a fly rod is about the most fun you can have fly fishing. I wouldn’t mind giving it a try.

I’m going next month to Broken Bow, 3 of us go twice a year for a weekend. Trout are cool but bass and bluegill have way more fight. I’m not very good yet but the worst day fishing is still better than the best day at work

Thanks for the info!

my office manager, at work. is bringing me some of his old fly gear tomorrow. Going to mess around with it at the house and maybe even try and catch something at the neighborhood pond. But I plan on going to blue river before the end of the month.

Going to buy an Orvis Encounter combo or TFO NTX black label combo if blue river trip goes good.

then hopefully northern New Mexico sometime this summer!
