I've built a couple but have been out of the resources, parts loop for a few years. There are several very knowledgeable and helpful folks that'll be along with the info you need.
I have been looking myself. Biggest issues right now are prices are up and availability is nonexistent.
Sporting rifle is a term used to counter the fictional term assault rifle that Democrats use. If you want to neuter it to Democrat demands then there would be no bayonet lug, threaded barrel, flash suppressors, pistol grip, optic, or detachable magazine.
Optics are not sporting and only used by assassin snipers. No need for a hunter to use one. Yes, some Democrats have said that.

Most all of the parts you need to build can be found at Palmetto State Armory. Another place with parts his primary arms. Bravo company has good stuff. It is a big deep dark hole when you get into it because there is a ton of choices and dealers. When it comes to building the sky is the limit. You need to have an idea of what you want to build and then go from there. The one part that is considered the gun is the receiver and that has to be sent to a licensed dealer for you to buy. You have to do your 4473 paperwork with it. There are a plethora of options and designs and makers when it comes to those receivers. All the other parts are just that, parts. Everything else can be sent to your house. Basically it comes down to how deep are your pockets or how good your line of credit is on a credit card right now. A lot of stuff has gone up 50 to 100% when it comes to parts and accessories. Ammunition has gone up almost 300%. It will be expensive to feed it whenever you finally make it

For "mid range" it's kinda a matter of preference.
Start with your lower - I use a lot of Anderson, which are budget priced. For "midrange" you might look at something like Spike's or Aero, but I honestly have used those and don't find them any better than the budget ones. For the most part, I think a forged is mostly a forged, almost all the same with minor differences - the rollmark is about it. lol Unless you look into some of their billet options. Billet isn't quite as strong as forged, but still plenty plenty strong enough for everyday and even hard use. The benefit of billet is a cooler look, sometimes integrated options like trigger guard, more flared magwell, etc. Lots of cool aesthetic options. That's my take on it. I've used all of the above, depending on my desire for whatever rifle I'm building. Decide if you want an ambi safety before you buy your lower.
After lower receiver, look at other options like your grip, your LPK (these are by and large mostly the same) and your buttstock. Some neat upgrades can be anti-walk pins for trigger, extended takedown and pivot pins, ambi or extended mag and bolt release. Or do a drop in trigger, which is a nice upgrade and isn't too expensive these days, companies like Rise Armament make some decent options that aren't priced like a Geissele. Or an upgraded but not complete drop in unit like a Larue MBT.

Great place to start your build would be a set of tools specific to the platform.
I got lucky and bought a Geiselle Reaction Rod from a fellow OSA member here years ago but MAGPUL and others make the vise tools to get your lower and upper both in a sturdy position to assemble that build. They also will come in handy over the lifetime of your new found life with what I call Adult Lego's.
Another cool piece of equipment that will come in handy is one of the mat's that show how the gun is assembled. Lot's of tiny springs and pins that are easily confused can be explained by one of the layout mats.
With time and a sincere message here and there you will find that this site has some of the greatest members and their willingness to share the tools and knowledge is a great place to find an answer to a question that will come up.

If I were making a recommendation for a build to someone, I’d tell them to go to InRangeTV and look at the What Would Stoner Do project. They initially started the project in 2017 and revamped it for 2020 because KE Arms developed a new complete polymer lower that’s based on improvements to the Cav Arms polymer lower.
