A heck of a lot easier to put the barrel of a rifle against a gator's noggin than a pistol. Yeah, I know they don't show them doing that anymore, always an aimed shot.
I think you nailed it there. Can stay farther away and get the job done. No need to get unnecessarily close to the tooth monster when it is thrashing. It’s going to be irritable already because of a big old hook in it and then them pulling it in.

22 is cheep and gets the job done.

they use cheap rifles that can rust and be dropped and it is a lower cost of doing business...also, 22 is cheap ammo that will do the job without making them deaf...a 22 rifle is much quieter than a pistol too. And, the guy Troy on there used to use CCI HP's which won't get enough velocity to expand when coming from a pistol vs a rifle. I think there are "multiple" reasons they use a 22 rifle...bolt action also more reliable than a pistol...imagine having a 14ft gator struggling and having a malfunction.

Just my personal opinion, but those shows are orchestrated by the film crews to create drama.
What you see may not be what is actually going on in the swamp with normal swamp dwellers in the same situation.
There is no telling what they actually use.
Last night I was watching and the guy was going to snipe a gator.
Showed him aiming his bolt gun then showed him pulling the trigger on an AR and then setting down his bolt gun. Real good editing.
