I read in an old Military Police Field Manual that if shooting was ever necessary, to aim for the arms or legs. The FM belonged to my older brother who served from 1965-69, although not as an MP.

I retired after 25 years in combat arms and I never heard anything like stated in post #2 and #3, ever. I say again, ever. I went through OSUT in 86 and nobody ever said anything like this nor throughout the rest of my time. If your instructors really said shoot to wound, then they were completely incompetent and derelict in their duty. Sounds like hooey.

Was the order from TRADOC, No one at Ft. McClellan agreed with it and everyone from the Battalion Commanders down to the newest boot Drills voiced their opinion about it daily. Every instructor would emphasize what Drill Sergeant Harn had said. Shoot to wound, but aim center mass every time.

Hey, I’m just saying what I was told in basic. I wasn’t about to argue with them. I just wanted to graduate and get out of there.
This! But then I friggin got assigned to Ft. McClellan afterwards!

20 years in the Army and I never heard it. We trained for center mass. Target silhouettes do not even have arms or legs. However, I would not be surprised if it were true. There never seemed to be an end to de facto “regulations.” Someone will put something out. Good/bad idea (rumor), it did not seem to matter. Once it gets repeated enough times and everyone will swear it is a regulation.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they had trained shoot to sound at some point. Just listen to Jack Carr, Andy Stumpf, or any number of other SOF guys who were in prior to 9/11; they often talk about how different the pre- and post-9/11 military are just because wartime experience teaches you a lot of lessons that you can’t learn any other way.

That said, every instructor I’ve ever heard who actually knows whereof they speak has said that you always aim center of mass because arms and legs are very hard to hit even on stationary targets, plus legs have major arteries that can cause you to bleed out in minutes if they’re hit. The only people who believe that claptrap about shooting arms and legs are people who got their firearms education from Hollyweird, and you know how accurate they are...

I was in pre and post 9/11 and I never heard such gibberish. See my previous post.

I don't remember anything about wounding in Navy boot camp or qualifications with the Air Force. I was probably tired and missed it.
