Thanks for all the input! Too many brands to choose from it seems! I do not plan to tun an amp right now, just the head unit powering these. Would like to stay under $300 for both doors, closer to $200 even better. The back doors have Pioneer 4x6's currently, and front door has factory tweeters and Rockford Fosgate 6.5's; the Pioneer definitely have noise in them, so for sure need replaced. The RF's don't sound too bad so far. Might change out the head unit to a BT model for hands free phone/audio as well. Thanks again!

mid you’re wanting to avoid the amp right now you need to make sure you’re paying attention to the speakers sensitivity rating. That’s essentially it’s efficiency. Typically, most aftermarket speakers will sound better than stock, but without extra juice, they won’t be as loud. Even with an aftermarket head unit. Choosing speakers with a higher sensitivity rating will sort of prevent this from happening. I believe the alpine S series has a pretty good sensitivity rating. I remember once I installed some Kenworth excellon components in a girlfriends car, and without a component amp you had to turn them up 3/4 of the way to get any sort of useable volume out of them. Just something to keep in mind.

And if you plan on keeping the stock headunit... gotta know what impedance it was designed to play it. It's PROBABLY 4 ohms if it was a factory non-amplified system. If it has an amplifier, that could be part of why it sounds crappy now, if someone just dropped regular speakers in and it isn't designed for them.

There're so many possibilities...

Luckily, my cars make zero sense to drop in big bucks on audio, Focal sound by far the best. Well above your 2-3 hundred.

your are limited by hu powered only. That alone will remove many speakers from the equation as the need too much power.

This is why I never upgraded the crappy audio in my biz. Integrated amp in the trunk. I’d have to rerun speaker wire etc, add sound deadening, all sorts of crap I don’t want to do to fix their stupid factory system.

I have had numerous systems in my days. I have always used kicker subs. They are excellent and don’t cost an arm and a leg. I currently have a 10” solobaric and it hits hard. I don’t need out of hand bass. I just want some nice sounding sound when I listen to my music. I can’t fit anything bigger under my seat. I am using a planet audio amp. You can get planet audio speakers. Their stuff is excellent and is very inexpensive. Another good brand is Memphis audio. You can get on Amazon and get it for cheap.

Any of you audiophiles need a quality amp, I have a factory reconditioned FOCAL 6 channel 900 watt amp I’m willing to part with. Currently have 2 in my truck running as monoblocks with 16 speakers if you want to hear what it sounds like. Also can hook up at Autofx in Yukon to test.

Since this thread seems to be reopened, I just put 4 6.5" kickers in my new Elantra. Better than what was in there, but now I have to look at amps and a sub. Thinking a 5 channel with maybe a 10" sub box.
