Bison in their wildest state were not prone to move when humans were involved in their attempted extermination.
They were killed by the thousands from train car windows and left to rot.
Reminds me of the road hunting maggots we have now shooting deer from a pickup window.

While I would love to get some bison meat, they would be very unsporting to shoot. I was on a controlled elk hunt at the WMNWR in 2006 and saw many wild bison behind the fences in the wilds of the refuge. You could literally walk up on them and get very close before they ran away. I know this because it was dark and I was walking the first morning to sit next to a 'bush' waiting for first light. I get about ten yards from it before the 'bush' ran off and it scared me to death. It was a bison.

I saw many others while hiking and walking and had many within 50 yards. My point is, it would feel like shooting a cow or horse out of a pasture. Not my style.

I doubt that it's really a hunt; however, I don't hunt my chickens either and I sure love eating them.

This is more like harvesting than hunting which I am 100% on board with. This is an example of why a lot of hunters say we do it, right? The health of the herd benefits by us removing a certain number of them as needed. I like the challenge of a good hunt as much as any other hunter, however the main goal is meat in the freezer. A lot of bowhunters argue that hunting with a rifle isnt hunting in their eye either. Everyone has their own definition of where the line is for presenting enough of a challenge that they feel it is ethical, and that is ok with me.

Would I brag about a hunt where I could walk up within 50yds of an animal and take it with little effort? Probably not.

Would it keep the smile off my face as I prepped, cooked, and ate the meat? Not in the least.

To each their own though.

I put in for it and it says in the application that it’s not a hunt. I wouldn’t mind grilling up a Buffalo burger at the Grand Canyon though.

Would that pickup be stopped or moving? I know exactly what you are talking about and have read many accounts of them killing buffalo from trains. I wonder how long it took them to learn to shoot from a moving train which isnt the smoothest form of transportation?

Marksmen for sure. Probably just shooting into the crowd to see what fell.
BTW when the local lake was flood stage high two years ago with water at the bottom of the Kaw city bridge, buddy and I took my canoe up past the waterfall way into Ks on a long day paddle. We got far enough up that the 16' canoe couldn't turn around. On a 90 degree turn in that small portion we found 3 bison skulls buried in the sand. No idea of the reason why they were there.
