Its all about the cost...if surgery/treatment, cost will be high. If not operable, they can keep them comfortable with steroids and the dog will think it is well again.

I have taken different approaches with a few different animals, but the last one was a golden retriever with cancer and I kept him going with only natural supplements for at least a year. Eventually, I knew it was time and we had to let him go. But he got another year of love and life and no invasive, expensive procedures.

Amzn littered with reviews of various products that people gave their dogs wit cancer. There are some very good stories. Look into some sort of dog immune product that contains AHCC. It can potentially help slow the growth & spread of the cancer. I'm sorry for you; we all love our animals!

We kept our last dog going for almost two years on drugs. One day she just decided she had had enough and refused to take her drugs two days later we made that final trip to the vet. They will tell you when it's time.

Can anyone recommend a good vet that has experience with cancer in dogs in the OKC area?

Our 6 year old Bassett hound was just diagnosed with it. Still trying to find out more info about it, and our vet is good, but so far it doesn't look good so I just want another opinion.

Thanks guys

The dappled mini dachshund I got my mom about the time I moved out ended up with Cushings Disease. She ended up caving and giving him prescribed meds and he had a couple more years of solid life, but he required a lot of extra care to make sure he didnt get any infections from his skin being dry. He played fetch like a crazed lunatic up until the last few weeks and we started discussing when to make the call. After a couple of days of him not being up excited to go do chores with dad and having difficulty going to the bathroom, we made the call to our vet friend. She came to the house so he had the comfort of being in his home. She got him to sleep ok, but the second dose to make his heart stop didn't work. We continued holding and petting on him while she administered two more subsequent doses. She kept apologizing, but this lady loves animals more than probably any human other than her daughter. She said at the end that the dose he ended up with was enough to take out a mastiff by weight. The little fellas heart just didnt know how to not fight. It makes my eyes get teary just thinking about it, but I take comfort knowing we gave him every day he asked for and didn't make him suffer any more than he needed to out of loyalty to us.

It feels bad to say, but I have shed far more tears over the loss of dogs through my life than I have relatives. I see it as a two fold blessing now though. I have lost relatives I have loved a lot but my inner circle is still here and I have also had some amazing and loyal dogs that deserved every tear and more upon their passing. If I ever get the green light to pick a dog for myself, it will definitely be another mini dachshund. There is just something different about them from every other dog we have had.

I am wishing your dog all the comfort and joy for a long time to come. The bond between human and dog is a strong one and we dont deserve the blind loyalty and love they give to us.
