I am going to be selling my father's old fishing rods, reels and need help figuring out prices, and if I should take the old line off. These are at least 40 years old. Probably 50 or more. I know I have had them about 25 years and I know he had them for years before his stroke made him stop fishing.

Since the old braided nylon line has been on there most of that time I think it should be taken off before trying to sell, do you guys agree?

Next I know these older vintage Penn reels sell in the $40 to $80 range. The small one is a Penn Peerless No9, the other I need to get a chance to read later. I have no idea on the rods. The 6ft is an old Otasco Black Knight and the 5.5ft is a Grantsport 500DCTT.F.

Any help or advice would be welcome. As usual my photos suck.

Sort of like:
I've got these stacks of 40 year old ammo, but I need to get rid of the old boxes first.

I'm no fishing expert, but I'd let the buyer decide if they want the vintage string.
There are vintage collectors of all types.

Good luck with the sale, and sorry to hear about letting go of your dad's things.

As for valuation, I'd try to determine what pole/reel you have - and review eBay 'sold items'.
And/or look to DuckDuckGo websites for vintage fishing pole valuation.

I'm no help here. Good luck!

Ok the bigger reel is a Penn 285 40-60. Near as I can tell they sell for about $25 while the other one goes for around $50 from what I have seen. I can not find a price on the Otasco rod but the other, heavier rod seems to be in the $25 range too. I think I am going to offer them for $50 for each rod and reel combo and call it good.

Both reels seem to work OK as far as winding line back in. I am afraid to try casting with them as I would never get the tangle unwound. :P

I agree with Bassin to leave the line on the reels because a collector, I feel, will want the line on it. Those are old saltwater reels and were probably used for cat fishing. I think the prices being asked are about right. They are classic reels. I have a couple of them from my Godfather who fished the Jersey coast. That's the best I can do.

I posted them in the classifieds for starters at $50 per rod and reel, and I did leave the line. I wish I could use that type reel because then I would keep them since I want to start fishing again. Sadly I always ended up with massive tangles and started using spinning rods.
