Has anybody else been hit with a fraudulent unemployment claim on their work history to get the COVID bonus bucks? I was just notified by HR yesterday that they had received a claim from OESC against my employment record. They called to confirm I was not the claimant which I wasn't because I retired in February 2020, just before the craziness began. I have since returned to that employer on a part-time basis per an agreement when I retired.

Yesterday's phone call seemed so random yet just a couple of inquiries turned up two former colleagues who were also hit. The HR lady gave me a link to OESC to report the fraud and they are, of course, denying/contesting the claim as being fraudulent.

I now also have to alert the credit reporting agencies which is another huge headache. I used to be a member of LifeLock but that got terribly expensive. This may make me regret leaving them.

Happened to a bunch of nurses at my hospital. Pretty common. Was on the news a lot last fall.

Do you use social media and have your occupation/employer listed on your profile?

Good clue - didn't know that little bit could support a claim. How does anybody use LinkedIn effectively without listing that info?

At the least, you can set your profile visibility to limited so that only people already connected to you can see your details.

I listed myself as happily retired and changed my D.O.B. on most sites to something ridiculous.

A couple years ago I got a postcard type letter (the kind you tear one side off and fold open). I think it came to the office. Almost disregarded it because it resembled spam mail. It said something about applying for unemployment benefits. I called immediately and told them that I did NOT initiate the claim. At that time the lady on the phone told me she could not tell me anymore about the claim since I did not initiate it (even though it was my name and SSN). Said they could only speak about it to the person who initiated it and the employer...... I told her that as me too. The company even has my last name in the title. After a little Ring-around-the-Rosie I got the claim canceled and address where they wanted the check sent to. It was in a crap little house in the middle of nowhere Florida. Tried to turn it in to authorities. No one cared. Since the scammer didn't actually get money there was no crime. Bunch of horse crap. They had an address Could of sent the bastard down the river.
