I haven't made this public on this forum but I am quickly approaching retirement (10/29/2021). With this coming up soon, I have the opportunity to pin a badge back on as a Reserve for the County or PD. What I am looking for are suggestions when it comes to a Duty sidearm. When I left my Reserve Unit in 2010 (after 20 years) I was carrying a 5 inch Govt model 45acp. Please give me some helpful insight.

I'd continue carrying what you were carrying if you were comfortable with it. I realize that may have been their firearm and not yours, but if you are required to purchase your own than get it or the aforementioned 1911 .45 acp.
That said, I am a huge fan of the 10mm auto. It used to be you had to choose between higher power, but lower capactity and slower reload of a revolver to get a magnum level of power. With the 10mm auto, it is as powerful as a .357 mag (more so if using real 10mm ammo and not the watered down junk loaded near .40 S&W specs). Plus, with guns such as Glock for instance, you can have 15+ rounds of that on tap. Many manufacturers offer it now. Even SIG has entered that arena and Springfield has a couple of updated models. Formerly they were 1911 design only. I have not bought a SIG yet but I'd like to get a DA/SA model.

I don’t know if I could something as nice as a fine 1911 getting dinged, dented, rained on, etc.

For me it’d be an M&P 9. But the Glock 19, Sig P320 and others could be solid options as well.

I am not, nor have I ever been a law officer, or ever played one on TV, and I didn't stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night, but personally I would carry a double stack 9mm Glock, or whatever most everyone else was carrying on the force for shared magazine capability if needed, which would most likely also be a double stack 9mm Glock.

I carried a Colt Series 70 Government Model (and still do 43 years later). Today I might reconsider and go with a double-stack 9 or 40 in Glock 17/19/22/23 or S&W M&P with backup hi-cap magazines for price. The CQB or a Staccatto if price is no object. I much prefer the single action trigger on a 1911 and the M&P trigger over the Glock. As above, go with your comfort zone. Practice, practice, practice, repeat.

I always said I would carry a MAC Truck in a holster if I could. With today's technology I would go with a 45 auto or 10mm.
Both would have to be double stacked mags with much more on my belt. Since my preference is a 1911 style SAO, I would consider a custom 1911 or any others that had the 1911 grip angle.
