I too have eaten a bunch of drum.
While not high up on my list of favorite eating fish, after a day of catching them on a fly rod, I will usually keep a couple for dinner.
Drum fillets, sweet potato fries, a vegetable and salad, make for an enjoyable meal.

The trick to eating drum is eating the smaller ones less than 4 pounds or it gets a little coarse for most people. The next thing is the fillets are a little tougher so I don't try to fry them. I cook them down covered in a Louisiana courtbouillion style hot tomato gravy -peppers onions spices and over a bed of rice it will surprise you how good it is. I have to many Cajun friends that would shoot me if they seen me throw one back.
Black Drum from the ocean are a whole different matter. They look the same just black and white striped but they have a premium flake white meat fillet. IMO.

I would imagine that a Creek Smallie would find those tempting also...
YES THE SMALLIES WOULD GO BAT **** CRAZY for them.
Unfortunately, I have never been creek fishing for small mouth bass, but if I did, I would fish nothing but crawdad flies in one form or another.
Those two particular flies however, have accounted for for some of my biggest trout on the Lower Illinois River.
I slipped out for a little urban fishing this morning and hit a small pond just off of 121st and Memorial in Bixby and caught probably the smallest Crappie I`ve ever caught. I caught it on a tiny rust colored jig that I picked up last week at the Beaver Dam fly shop...
I took a friend and 7 year old out for his first time fishing. Fishing was a little slow, but we had a good time. The 7 year proclaimed the next time, he was going to show us how it is done!
For many years, when the channels move into the rocks on a dam to spawn (generally late May, really early June), I’ve never come back empty handed by using a simple bait holder hook (4/0-6/0) with a full night crawler crammed on it, a couple split shots (8-10” up), and a bobber (about 3-4’ from the hook). I put it anywhere from 6”-1’ off the bottom (all man made dams are pitched about the same), this works out to anywhere from 8’-12’ from the bank. I just toss it out around 15’ or so, and reel in slowly until the hook touches a rock on bottom, then toss it again about 2’ out further than that.
Sorry for the excessive explanation, or if someone has already said it (I’m not reading 52 pages to see haha).
This has been my go to method since I was a kid, if I just want to feel the freezer. If you’ve not tried this, give it a shot. It may still be on the tail end of the spawn, since we had some cool weather in May, but that’s a guessing game. GOOD LUCK!!!
