I did the same thing to replace a spark plug on a 79 Trans Am Turbo.
Had an old 77 gmc work van. The rear plug on the passenger side would foul due to bad rings. I took a hole saw and drilled a hole in the fender well. I could change that sucker in a few minutes on the side of the road.

Ye Olde Cummins has a Denso stater, one of the best starters I have ever been a part of or worked on, After 280k you would have to turn the key 5-6 times to get a connection. Took it apart and the solenoid plungers copper and contacts had completely arced away. 12 dollar supersized plunger and contact kit cleaned the gunk out and greased the bearings good for another 280.

Straight six babe is the way to roll. Easy to work on and room on both sides to get at things, I have owned several. a 262 Pontiac, two -292 Chevys a 300/6 Ford, and two 5.9l Cummins. Had a couple of straight 4banger Nissan Z motors, same thing. Every one of them was dang near indestructable, had plenty of power, some had more torque than the eq v8s and all lasted forever.
got my 300k fender badge on this one I drive now

I thought I had a alternator go out on my Tundra and started looking into replacing it.
Take of left front tire drop power steering pump, stick your tongue out your mouth on the right side and flip your spouse off twice on Tuesday!!! Was a busy week and called a Mech that I know and old boy told me to change the battery.....But, but but I sputtered and he said " trust me I have been working on these for years and have never replaced a Starter " . So I look at the battery and it was probably the same one it drove off the lot with new.... so what the heck..... it worked > Charging system been right as rain since!!! So I have to say that even though some of the stuff is a PITA to work on, these Tundras are reliable !!! Just got a bonus at work and bought the parts to rebuild the brakes all around and replace the front hubs and ABS sensors and a new set of tires, getting ready for deer season ......... gonna keep the thing til I cannot fix it any more .......

truck is 21 years old has i think 300,000 miles on it. first time to replace the starter so it has been reliable. two years ago the front ball joint broke and the wheel fell off and flipped under the truck. it has been a good truck. i had to replace the starter last year on the landcruiser 100. same engine same pia but also has 250K on it also and it is a 99.

Man, I remember when I could place both feet inside the engine bay of my truck when I was working on the thing. They had plenty of room back then, and the engine was out in front of the windshield, not tucked way back underneath.

Indeed. My old '76 F-250 with a 300 inline six has room for a loaded duffel bag on each side.
