The GOP is far too stupid to recognize their loss for what it is, a repudiation of their platform. What they fail to realize is that their platform has strayed from the founding principles of the party. It's strayed so far, they now resemble the Whigs as their party crumbled around them in the 1850's. The really sad part is, if the Republican party returned to their roots, they'd win by a wide margin. Fiscal conservatism, civil rights and good stewardship of our natural resources was a pretty good combination.
