I was able to connect this morning. The hunt really started last night. I was sitting on a trail when my daughter shot her buck 1/2 mile away. I could hear a heck of a fight deep in the trees that ended after dark. This morning, I decided I would go sit on the trail near where I heard the fight. At 8:20am, a single doe came out and crossed the trail. I continued to sit on the frosty ground but decided I wasn’t sitting past 9:00am. After not seeing anything else, I got up at 9:00 and started easing down the trail. After about 60 yds, I heard leaves crunching so I froze. I see a deer walk up on the opposite side of a little scrub oak and proceeded to thrash his antlers on the leaf covered tree. Still couldn’t see what deer it was...then he stepped out. At 30 ft! I realized it was one of my target bucks and I was able to shoulder the rifle before he realized I was there. The 178 gr ELD-X from the Remington 300 SAUM at 30 ft does a heck of a number on the heart. I let this guy walk 3 years ago. Missed him at 300 yds last year. I guess he decided I wasn’t going to give up so decided to step out and get it over with. 24 1/2” spread.
