I see 28 gauge shot shells for sale all over the place, I’ve never known of anyone personally that owns a 28, must not be many around since I keep seeing ammo on shelves in different places

They're smaller than a 20 ga... wonder how they compare with a .410?

Well, here... I'll answer my own question. :D

    .410 bore
The 410 comes in two sizes, a 2 1/2 inch and a 3 inch. According to Remington the 2 1/2 inch shells have a 1/2 oz load going at 1250 fps. Their 3 inch loads have 11/16 oz of shot and travel at 1135 fps. This means that if you use a load of 6's each 2 1/2 inch shell will have 112 pellets and the 3 inch shells will have 155 pellets.

    28 Gauge
The 28 gauge shell is 2 3/4 inches long. Remington only has one load size listed. It is 3/4 oz at 1295 FPS. Winchester sells a 1 oz load that travels at 1205 FPS. A 3/4 oz load of 6's has 169 pellets and a 1oz load has 225.

The 28 gauge is mainly used in skeet

    Slightly more than a 3" .410, 11-16ths shot vs 3-4oz
The 28 patterns better, due to the shorter, fatter shot column.

Limited availability has hurt the 28s popularity, but it is an awesome youth or ladies, low recoil round. Much better than
410, which is an expert round, not a youth training round.

28s can be found in semi-auto, pump, SxS, O-U, and single shot.

Small gauge duck hunting is becoming a thing. Close quarters over decoys for the 28’s. My son is in the market for one. A stoeger 28 o/u was in the classifieds recently. I took about 3 minutes to decide if I wanted it. By the time I looked again, I was to late.

28 gauge is my favorite for skeet shooting. Of the four different skeet gauges, my highest average is with the 28 gauge.
