So, I pulled up the current income tax rates and did a lesson on piecewise functions and how the income tax brackets worked into that. Sadly, the aforementioned student had no clue that the income tax structure was set up like that. More sad, was that even afterwards she still thought that "rich" folks were paying less income taxes than poor people.
