I modify all of my slide stops to keep it from happening by putting a small channel on the knob where the plunger goes in.
I'll send one of my slide stops with the mags in a couple weeks and you can see what I do.

Do you mind posting a picture of your modification? I've never had an issue installing a slide stop but I know some people can't seem to get it right. A guy I know has a Unertl 1911 and he repeatedly pointed out that the slide stop had been modified to make installation easier. He was really proud of that feature.
