Hah! One reason I so much like the 681 is because it reminds me much of a 4" GP100 I owned in the late 80s, which after selling it was found to be not all that common, it had fixed sights and half underlug, and the Viper reminds me much of that gun in lines.... that GP weighed identical to this 681, while the blockier GP weight distribution more in-hand, and the trimmer Smith pleasingly (for my 158gr shooting) having more out-front hang to reduce flip and steadier hold... but, really a tie, good guns all...and as you will undoubtedly find the Colt...however, and this not a prediction, I would not be suprised were you to find the 1980s Smith SA and DA trigger/stroke more manageable, it seems everything today, even the nice things, driven by "lawyer proof". Neither the Colt site, nor major vendors, seem to show any easily findable weight, but have run across new version quoted weights of 28.5 ozs, which is lighter than an M&P and truthfully sounds more like an original aluminum framed gun at a quarter pound lighter than the M&P, but never held, weighed, or recall a weight of the original .38Spl...if it IS that light, I sure would not care to shoot it with .357. PS- found their official spec sheet downloaded to the Colt forum, and they do list it at 28.5 ozs, and found an early entry blog post showing the 3" while giving a weight of 26.9 ozs...if true, will make a great carry gun of the carried much/shot little class. Be sure to throw that pretty sucker on a scale when you receive it. At todays prices, even the MSRP looks great.
