1) I know this sounds odd, but are you sure you hit the deer. You never mentioned anything about finding the deer after a long search, or the reaction of the deer. I've seen alot of people swear they hit when it was a clean miss. The hit would have been audible to others, and maybe to you. Then again, if the hits were bad there will be no blood. 2) Most of the deer I have shot with the 300gr Hornady SST rounds have had a 50cal hole on both sides and average blood trails. Only one left a large exit that that round went in the front shoulder and came out the back of the offside rib cage. 3) 100gr with 250gr projectile should be more than adequate at the distances you are speaking of, the key is putting the round where it counts. There is plenty of energy there to do what the bullet needs to which is put a hole throught he vital organs. Have you shot your rifle at these ranges from hunting positions? The reason I ask is a BP rifle will have a different POI at those distances with different levels of support on the rifle. For example my rifle will shoot 5in high at 100 yards if just resting on the bench or not being held down (i.e forarm just laying in my hand), but its dead on if I hold it solid and tight. Good luck!!!
