OK, so 2 things.
#1 This stock was already the victim of Bubba. Bubba "painted" it in an almost black gel stain that almost completely obscured the wood grain, and then applied a thick coat of polyurethane with a 4" brush leaving tons of streaks and runs.
#2 This particular stock and hand guard will be for sale once finished.

I removed the buttplate, nose cap and band retainers, stripped the stock, sanded out the finger groves and stained them with a mixture of dark walnut and ebony. I then spent most of the next 2 weekends cleaning out the crud and sanding the rest of it down. The hand guard was so bad I had to mix up a batch of wood bleach and bleach it out to get a closer match to the stock. I did a traditional gun-stock stain and am currently waiting a few days for that to dry completely.

I'm going to apply several coats of Tung Oil Varnish and probably aim for something between Military style and Matte.

Tell me what you think.

(Not sure why the camera put such a red cast on the butt end.)

If you want to mimic a Russian finish, a coat of iodine on the wood followed by some amber shellac looks good, knock down the shine with some steel wool afterwards.

Sorry, just put the 2nd coat of Formby's on it last night.... Not a true Tung Oil, but a Tung Oil varnish. I prefer it, as it gives the nice appearance of Tung Oil but is a more resistant surface with much lower maintenance.

What does it look like now? And what are you wanting for it?

Here is the finished stock. Left it a satin finish to more closely resemble a Military finish. I put detailed hi-res pics in an album on imgur here: http://imgur.com/a/1Klpi Click the images in the album to see the full size pic.
I also have the original buttplate. I just forgot to install it before taking the pics.

...those are not barrel bands, just hair ties to hold it in place.
