Any Model 12 mechanics out there?

A family member showed me his 16 gauge Model 12 last night. Made in 1924 and obviously used very hard and not well maintained. I told him I’d clean it up. I cannot

get the takedown pin to rotate the magazine far enough clear the threads. Maybe 1/8 turn and it stops, I’m not gonna put any serious torque on it, not my gun and don’t wanna break anything. Any tips?

I'm assuming you are referring to a Winchester Model 12.
Maybe this will help. He does show the reassembly process.

Did you loosen the barrel band screws?

I’d make it a non shooter to never being able to again and give it to a kid to play with. Unless it holds some endearing sentiments to someone, then by all means spend some coin if you wish! My 2cents.

Oh, soak it and let it sit awhile.
