I have been on multiple ride alongs for just about every shift in every district in OKC. I happen to know guys in each to be able to do this. When we have had foot chases I was allowed out of the car to Follow and if needed help to detain if other officers had not arrived in time. Never had to, but that was the instruction I was given. I was also allowed to brig my weapon with me and leave it in the car if the officer(friends) didn't already have a backup in the car. I was probably allowed to do more than most. I was also allowed to enter behind when clearing rooms and houses that had been broken into. They are a lot of fun and sometimes boring. Just depends on the time of year, and shift. Winters kinda suck. The cold keeps them in. Right before Christmas you would think would be fun, but you mainly get shoplifters, car crashes(non injury by the malls), auto burglaries. Summer can be a good time. Once had a noise complaint. Show up to find a bunch of high schoolers having a swim party/keg party. Walk into the back yard and are greeted by topless girls drunk out of their mind!!! That's when you wish you had a camera!! Summer also brings the welfare checks that end up being DB's that have been there for a few days with no ac. All that to say, it's kind of a crap shoot as to whether you will actually enjoy it or not. If you want to be an officer it is worth trying to ride along on all shifts.
