There is no such thing as a 'preconceived' notion. Every negative (or positive) belief began at some time with a bad (or good) personal experience by someone. Of course there are always those that get their beliefs/notions through the 'he said-she said-they said-my friend said-my relative said' basis, which is not based on actual personal experience but just on what others have SAID. Shooting sports such as competitions and hunting used to be well received among most Americans with competitions being regularly televised. Idiots that mishandled their weapons were NOT tolerated by the gun community and especially by shooting-range safety officers and range owners - in other words we in the gun community policed ourselves, and by doing so, were seen as a responsible and acceptable group of sportsmen, which drew others into the 'Shooting Sports', increased the number of sanctioned shooting ranges, increased the interest in competitions, increased the number of gun/gun accessory venues, and helped keep the overall prices of guns and gun related accessories down through volume sales. Now days it's more fun to watch videos on social media about idiots mishandling guns and even giving them a 'thumb-up' for their stupidity. We critique 'mass' shootings as if it was a sporting event. We applaud gun accessory manufacturers when they introduce work-a-rounds for our [illegal use] pleasure . . . then we wonder why the gun community is demonized without a thought about how that came about, and then we constantly whine and cry about 'unfair' restrictions or bans placed on us because of what those 👉 idiot gun owners did. The gun community has become it's own worse enemy!
