I am happy to announce that Project Appleseed has scheduled another weekend marksmanship clinic at USSA in Tulsa on September 28-29. A lot of you in the Tulsa area have been asking when the next Appleseed will be in your area, so I hope to see a lot of you there.
For those who haven't been to an Appleseed before, our mission is simple: to turn this country back into a nation of Riflemen. By "Riflemen," we mean a lot more than just folks who are armed with a rifle. We actually already have quite a bit of them in this country... but unfortunately the vast majority are not nearly as proficient with that rifle as they out to be. Most are also likely not aware of the history that led to this country's great heritage of marksmanship, nor do they feel the urgent necessity of acting to preserve this heritage, along with the heritage of liberty it is so intertwined with, before it is gone forever. Project Appleseed is out to change that.
The marksmanship curriculum is designed to teach everything a shooter needs to know to comtrol the Rifleman's Quarter Mile -- meaning that he can hit any man-sized target he can see out to 500 yards, with a rack-grade rifle, iron sights, and standard ball ammunition. All you need to participate is a rifle and enough ammo to finish the course -- we estimate 400 rounds if you are going to come for both days. Any rifle is fine, though you will find it easier to keep up with the course of fire if you have one that loads quickly, like with detachable mags or stripper clips. We also have a procedure that allows tube feed rifles to keep up. We highly recommend that your rifle be fitted with some kind of adjustable 2-point sling... preferably a GI shooting sling type, like the 1907 or M1/M-14 variety. Use of the sling as a marksmanship aid is an important part of the instruction. Rimfire rifles are fine, as most of the shooting will be done on reduced-size Army Qualification Test (AQT) targets at 25m. Participants who are shooting at or near Expert level on the 25m AQT will have the opportunity to split off from the group on Sunday afternoon, and shoot the AQT at full distance on USSA's 300 yard rifle range. Anyone who shoots Expert on the AQT, either at 25m or full distance, is awarded our Rifleman's patch. It isn't easy... we use an older AQT from the days of the M1 and M-14 that is harder than the current one.
Appleseed has a great shooting curriculum, but that's not all we are about. Our parent organization is the Revolutionary War Veterans Association. As such, we teach a little Revolutionary War history at every Appleseed event. In particular, we tell the story of the Battle of Lexington and Concord, in detail most of you have likely never heard unless you have been to an Appleseed. This was the first battle of the Revolutionary War, and one in which the American heritage of marksmanship played an important role.
Come for the shooting... come for the heritage... come to meet some of the finest fellow Americans you will ever meet. But most importantly, JUST COME!
