[QUOTE="Roy14, post: 3652578, member: 41855"] From the studies I’ve read, 5.56 FMJ reaches a velocity that usually causes it to fragment through multiple layers of drywall, and those studies pointed towards it being safer than a handgun caliber because a handgun caliber is slow enough to continue through the drywall and into another room. Not to say that will always happen, and it’s dependent on what ammo you choose to use, but that article definitely changed my way of thinking on the subject. That being said, I do not use an AR for HD; even though it’s probably best suited for my scenario, I’ve never gotten to the point of an AR feeling like an extension of my body like some other platforms are. And though I live where long shots are definitely a possibility, and anyone who makes it to my door has made a concerted effort to come a half mile from the county road to do so, I am unlikely to engage at a distance beyond what a pistol or shotgun is capable of.
