For the distance shooters here what would be the shortest length barrel for a 7mm rem mag before there was a lose of performance? Is 22" to short or even 20"? Thanks for the help.

Performance as in accuracy is not necessarily dependent on barrel length, it may be more accurace with a shorter stiffer barrel, or it may not, lot's of factors there. Performance as in muzzle velocity for the 7mm mag, you would'nt want a shorter barrel than 26". You would gain velocity up to about 32" but not very fun to carry around in the field. If I remember right you lose or gain about 20-25fps per inch.

Having once bought a 7mm Rem Mag, I think for a 20" barrel, you might as well buy a 7mm-08 and save the blinding flash and earth-shattering KABOOM from half the Mag's powder burning after the bullet has left the barrel.
The deer, pig, whatever will be just as dead.
