Ask for examples from whomever you choose. I've seen nice firearms turn out not so nice from sand or bead blasting. A delicate touch, correct media for the job and appropriate masking is important.

Is there a chemical means to remove the coating?

after spending sevaral years in the industrial coatings industry i would definately say use a high qaulity low abrasive material such as glass beads or soda blasting.
