Would you recommended sweating the cosmoline out of the stock prior to sanding? Or just jump right in with the sanding?

Sweat it out and then go at it with some mineral spirits.

I used those rough grit foam sanding blocks first to get the gummy varnish/cosmo off, and then went in with regular sand paper on a little electric palm sander http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008CCE7HK/ref=wms_ohs_product?ie=UTF8&psc=1
