This is funny in a sad sort of way. In another sign that the end of times is approaching, Bill Clinton has been named by the National Fathers Day Council to receive one of its coveted Father of the Year awards: With the profound generosity, leadership and tireless dedication to both his public office and many philanthropic organizations, President Clinton exemplifies the attributes that we celebrate through the Father of the Year award, said Dan Orwig, chairman of the National Fathers Day Committee. Perhaps this explains it: The not-for-profit group awards Father of the Year to contemporary lifestyle leaders of our culture and raises money for its philanthropic efforts. Past recipients from the world of politics have included Michael Bloomberg, Andrew Cuomo and his father, Mario Cuomo, and Rudy Giuliani. Accepting the award on behalf of Mr. Clinton is Arnold Schwarzenegger. Just kidding. But John Edwards was in fact a 2007 Father of the Year award winner. Newsday discreetly raises an eyebrow. Now this is subtle: The award seems like a bit of a head scratcher because the Chappaqua residents only known child, Chelsea, is a married 32-year-old woman who hasnt lived at home since she moved away to college in 1997, a few months before most Americans first heard the name Monica Lewinsky. Not that theres anything wrong with that!
