Went to the stand tonight with intentions of my daughter taking her first deer with a compound tonight. She took her bow, I took the ML. She was going to take any doe, or if one of the 3 we're after show up, she was going to make an attempt to draw, while my cross were on it. If at anytime the buck spooks or looks up at us, I'm pulling the trigger. Plan was in place and the evening began with this B&C grinner.
About 6:30, three doe come in, 2 pretty good sized, the other an old horse headed nanny. She doesn't draw on the the two smaller ones, and for whatever reason, the big doe walks around the other direction and presents no shot.
6:55 this coyote comes in and chows on rice bran.
It's dead still, she makes an attempt to stand up, and does. She's about to draw on the yote and for whatever reason I look over to my 2 o'clock and 50y out is a dark huge body coming through brush/timber. I tell her to freeze, and she does. He is walking head down directly at us and toward the bran. He gets about 15y out, facing us and he spots the coyote. Snorts, turns and lifts his tail and starts skirting around a large dead tree. While he's behind the tree, I get the ML over behind by daughter and over to my left shoulder. He clears the tree at about 50y away, squeeze the trigger and off into the tall grass he goes. I told my daughter I hated that she didn't get a shot, even if she'd missed I wished she could have shot at him. She says, "who cares, that is the largest living thing I've ever seen in the woods!". Heaviest to date by about 15lbs to come off this property.
250gr Hornady XTP HP going just under 2300fps did it's job. Punched a fist sized hole on entry, quarter size exit on the far side rib, and lodged between the hide and ribs.
