About 1980 I was asked to accompany a group of 11 Girl Scouts (One of them being my Daughter) on their first camp out with their two female scout leaders who were outdoor people also. We all had fun "roughing" it close to a campsite with restrooms. Fun teaching them how to put up tents, some of them to strike a match for the very first time to light leaves and twigs for camp fires, cook their own hot dogs, and naturally make smores. None got burned, broken, or eaten by bears. We had one scrape when she tripped over a rock walking through the woods on a "field trip". I had to ask my Daughter to stand back and let some of the other ones that had never camped out before do it for them selves. A few years ago I was out with my daughter and we ran into one of her friends that had gone on that camping trip. It had made an impression on her to strike a real match almost 40 years ago. Young people growing up in the city today have no idea what they are missing not getting out in the woods enjoying nature. They gave me an official "Girl Scout" membership certificate with my name on it, suspect not many males have those from the past. Still have it hanging on the wall just for fun with some other old stuff.
