I would look at a SWFA 16X or 20X scope. You should be able to get one for around $300. Leaves money for nice rings and some reloading stuff. You will need a heavy bullet to make it to 1K. Good luck.

I'm a novice when it comes to the .223 round, but when I first saw the OP's desire to shoot paper at 1000 yards, my first reaction was:

:yikes2:

I'm glad to see that reaction was not out of line :P

I would not try and hit anything with a .223 at 1000yds. I have shot at 1000yds and further but not with .223 nor would I claim to be able too.

But do as you desire. Nikon makes very nice glass.

I own and will own again Nikon glass. I use Nightforce when shooting 1000yds and further though.

Okay, so I will go for 400yds. Thanks for those that actually suggested scopes instead of pissing and moaning about my ignorance. :-)

I will get some 400yd practice and then ask you all for suggestions about a 1000yd gun.

I appreciate all the help!

There are guys keeping the 223 supersonic out to 1000 yards with 70 and 80 grain bullets. These are handloads, usually in 26" barrels with 1:7 twist. You need your starting velocity to be over 3000 fps to keep it supersonic the whole way. The drop is in the same ballpark as a 308. So it can be done.

400 is no problem, I do that quite often with my 18" with Millett scope.

When you start shooting 1000 yards, you'll appreciate yourself if you buy a scope that is better than a $600 scope.

I do believe if I were to get into long range shooting, I'd definately want an optic that was capable of more than what I'd be doing with it. I don't want any of my equiptment to be the limiting factor.
