I would not oil it if the container is air tight it should not deteriorate.
I have no desire to stash guns or food somewhere.
But what would be ideal is a place to stash yourself . A remote under ground bunker or at least a big hole in the ground.
Chances are if I need to bug out I will have a rifle in hand and plenty of ammo and if the SHTF like that I will kill others and take their stuff also if I need to.
If I do not get shot in the process.

I'd oil/grease anything to be stored for long periods. Yer gonna trap some humidity in the container year round in Oklahoma.

A 5 gal bucket with a gasket (hydraulic oil, etc.) should last a lifetime if sealed properly & buried. Sunlight is the main enemy of most plastics outdoors.

Whatever ya use, silicone caulk is yer friend. And don't bury anything in a low place that may hold water for long periods.

    Just a few thoughts. :drunk2:

My savage axis .223 bolt action. pencil barrel.
It is stupid accurate and the little 55 gr V max enters into a critter and even 400+ lb hogs about 2" and then begins to come apart
    creating devastating shock and damage.
    Bang flop.
Ammo is not as heavy as .308 and I have my drops on it to 500 yards, it is under 5" at 500 yards so a lot better than a .22 long rifle.

I want to keep the intruders way far away from me.
I am quick with it also. And it is pretty light.

If I were to bury or hide something something long term, I’d probably do what the military. Slather it with Cosmoline.

Sadly, I don't own enough weapons to really put any away for SHTF purposes. I would say 1/3 of them are family heirlooms that are nestled in a fireproof safe. The rest of my firearms, I can carry on my person with the help of slings, a large backpack and a couple of holsters...like a strong side and maybe a crossdraw.

It sucks trying to be a firearm enthusiast on a small town cop's salary. :cry3:

    Let's tell the truth.
You don't want to bury any weapons, cause then you'll be spending too much time with a shovel in your hand digging and refilling the hole every week when you trade off the hideaway gun.

So do I. But mines cut to 16” and threaded for a suppressor.
