SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Environmentalists are pushing legislation to ban lead ammunition in California to prevent toxins from poisoning scavengers that eat animal remains left by hunters.

Final language of the bill was introduced Monday by Assembly Member Anthony Rendon, D-Lakewood, who said the legislation would remove a lingering source of pollution from the environment. It was sponsored by three major environmental groups – Defenders of Wildlife, Audubon California, and the Humane Society of the United States.

"There really is no question that lead ammo is a threat," said Kim Delfino of Defenders of Wildlife. "To pass a bill in California would set the stage for this happening throughout the country, the way low-emissions vehicle standards changed the market nationwide."

Think it is hard to find ammo, wait until something like this passes.

I thought Cali already had some sort of no lead law for hunting

Yes there are "lead free" hunting zones in certain marked areas of the state. Its for the "endangered" Condor. You can still buy lead ammo for plinking/self defense/and even hunting in certain areas(where the is no danger to the Condor, lol).

This quote is slightly misleading. If Ca passed the law banning led bullets the only way it would really effect other states would be if Californians purchased more ammo than most of the other states. The Ca emissions thing was an auto maker decision to comply with a law in one of the largest car markets. Depending on the market share in Ca it could end up just driving up the price of bullets there.

You are awfully optimistic. Once this kind of crap starts, it gives a template for antis in other states to follow. Watch for no lead bullets on Federal land...then State land.....then anywhere.

The lead shot for waterfowl was introduced by folks touting decling populations of birds due to lead poisoning. Some lead free zones were created, and bird numbers started growing. Presto! Lead shot= poisoned birds. What they didn't say was how many thousands of nesting areas were returned and protected at that same time.
pretty soon lead shot was outlawed for waterfowl everywhere. Made a bunch of money for firearms manufacturers and ammo producers.

Also sets the stage for the next "no-lead" legislation.

It's junk science about the condor getting lead poisoning From spent bullets.
Recent real science has shown that bullet lead wont "dissolve" in any animal. Evidence of lead in their systems comes from air pollution.

So, what will LE's in CA use? Slingshots with marbles?

police and politicians are always exempt from laws in CA. private citizens are merely second class citizens that pay for it all. I realize that the police do not write the laws and there are certainly a lot of good officers in CA, but there are also a lot of bad ones that do try and sway public opinion into disarmament(or refuse to allow permitted carry).
