Getting older and CRS comes into play more often but wasn't there a thread here not very long ago about the shortage of canning jars ?

Anyway, my better half and I were in Winco off 19th St. in Moore yesterday and they had a ton of Ball brand canning jars plus several cases of the Mason brand......just thought I'd pass it along in case folks here are having a hard time finding canning jars.

Oh, they've also got some good looking T-Bones on sale for $4.98 per pound......didn't buy them all but let's just say I Neckbearded several. :)

This is good to know. Lately our regular source Ace hardware hasn't had any and when they do come in they aren't the price they used to be. The price on pint jars has gone up about 50%. There's either a shortage or everyone has started canning. I suspect the latter. Once in a while you can find some at garage sales or flea markets.

I'm gonna give away my secret -- JoAnn's Fabrics and Hobby Lobby both carry flats of Ball jars. People use them for artsy-fartsy stuff. Recently JoAnn's went up on their price -- the bastards. I used to be able to drag my purchase out over several days so I could use a 50% off coupon -- which made them THE best place in town to get jars but someone else has figured out where my "sweet spot" is so now I go in ON truck day and ask if they got any jars in on the truck. It's hit and miss but I can pick up a case or two of jars each week, more often than not.

We're good on the jars, but Suregel seems to have vanished.

When I was a kid, Mom used regular old Jell-O in her jellies and jams. Worked pretty darn well as I remember it! My favorite was fig with strawberry Jell-O!

I hadn't heard of that before, but it sounds like it would work! We can a bit of jellies every year around here. Wild plum is my absolute favorite and it has so much natural pectin that it doesn't require Suregel or anything to help it set up. Jalepeno is a completely different story!

I tried banana jam -- twice. Would not set. More like banana syrup. But it was good. I used some pectin I have NO IDEA when I bought it. I didn't think pectin went bad but what do I know?? Nothing apparently. Lol

I will try again. And I'm gonna have to MAKE myself not eat the figs while I pick them and try that fig/strawberry jello thing. That sounds pretty good.

This may sound weird, but my favorite way with the fig jelly was to put it on vanilla ice cream!
