Anybody set up a train set around their Christmas tree every year?...my new wife wants to start a tradition of setting up a train set under our tree....we are planning on having kids and she thought this would be a fun family tradition at Christmas...so, I am looking for a decent train set....if you have one, which one?.....I've been eyeballing the Polar Express set...looks decent.

Wait till after Christmas and you might get a deal. I got my son the Thomas Christmas set for like $35 shipped from Target, when it's normally over $100

I've always used LGB. They're not cheap but you can find a used one on EBay. They used to be made in Germany but went belly up. The newer ones are Chinese. If go older. They are for indoor and outdoor use so literally will last a lifetime. You can go get a piece of crap for under 100 at a name brand store but it won't last through all your kids. My family owned a train store so just trust me!

When I had my first child, we bought a Christmas Train set at Walmart. IIRC, it lasted about 10 Christmas' and I know we spent under about 20 or 30 bucks because we were too broke to buy anything nicer. This model had a working steam stack, but that only lasted a few years. The kids had a blast and when it was finally tripped over and a few pieces broke, we retired it and the kids were older and didn't have an interest in getting another.

Enjoy the memories to come with the kids and the wife. And try not to stress over the small stuff, and take plenty of videos and pictures.

Was it the store on Cherry St? LGB stuff is nice, but yep- pricey. I've got some Lionel stuff around but it's the newer Chinese stuff.

I set up a small set every year..started out under the tree then moved to a 46" diameter table decorated in Winter theme. I did not buy a set but purchased a seperate steam loco, railcars, track and power supply. Don't get smaller than O Gauge and consider the MTH brand as an alternative to Lionel.

Ok, I have no clue about train gauges...what is the difference?
