Colt 1911 Hi Viz post style sight install

here's the basic steps installing a modern front sight on your colt 1911 with staked in front sights.

1911 staked front sights has two different size posts. 88 to current has the slightly larger stake and can be easily filed to fit early smaller tenon.

Hi Viz is one of the only supplier that has stock for front stake style sights with optic rod.

this is a Gold Cup series 80 ...

thanks.... all tips are appreciated.

didn't even think to dremel out old stake. come to think of it, a round grinding wheel would have been better than a rat tail file smoothing out staked tenon.

next time instead of a flat steel plate to support new sights during press.
I'll custom mill out a groove exact height and width of new sight. this will allow support without risk of collapsing new sights.

a different end mill would used then one pictured

The next install will go really smooth, but if you have access to a mill; why not dovetail some sight cuts? Staking sights can be a pia sometimes.

really fortunate to have a mill and lathe at home. mill is a low end Chinese one, but it's full size. lathe is an old Southbend with 9in swing.

been thinking of ordering the dovetail end mill and the fixture that holds the slide. plans are to mill grooves in front of slide. been debating on milling larger grooves at 90 degree to rail or duplicate existing small grooves.

ejection port will be radius soon along with tuning the ejector by smoothing out and adjusting tension. barrel ramp is already nicely polished and at correct angle. barrel lug to frame is nice and tight.

goal is to duplicate a Wilson setup with me doing all the work...
