A local gang began to loot and pillage the area after the lights went out. If gangs suddenly went unopposed due to the collapse of society, what steps would you take in order to keep your family safe?

I would try to talk to them, convince them that what they are doing is wrong, and maybe offer them some assistance, if they are really in need.

Or something.

This and this, but from ambush, with extreme prejudice, no opportunity for them to inflict casualties on my group. Then take what they had and add it to the family arsenal. Never Never trade weapons that might be used against you.

Poison a bunch of rations, "hide" them in the next logical looted area, pick off the survivors

Ambush with extreme prejudice. Gangs are not armies, they are bullies. A few die and they will look for easy pickings elsewhere.

Situational awareness and preparedness are the key.
