A mysterious respiratory illness of unknown origin has killed two people in southeast Alabama and put five more in the hospital.

A May 21 statement from the Alabama Department of Public Health says that seven people have been admitted to a hospital with a fever, cough and shortness of breath in recent weeks.

State and local health departments are investigated the disease cluster in consultation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Laboratory samples have been obtained from all the patients and testing continues, according to the statement.

Dr. Mary McIntyre, spokesperson for the Alabama Department of Public Health, said the illness was first reported late last week and the last of the seven patients was hospitalized Monday.

McIntyre says officials hope to have preliminary results on the samples back by Wednesday or Thursday morning.

Hospital staffers have been told to wear N95 breathing masks and take other precautions when caring for patients who have respiratory symptoms. It is unclear at this time which hospital received the patients and which municipalities the illnesses were concentrated in.

Very interesting Spata.

The Coronavirus has been around a looooong time, the cool thing about it is that it's an RNA based virus...won't go into detail and bore everyone.

This virus infects a lot of mammals and birds and if I remember correctly there are a few specific "farm" and "barnyard" diseases to these animals. I think the Coronavirus does cause a lot..not all...but a lot of the common colds we catch...the other most common one for colds is the Rhinovirus. The neat and interesting thing about viruses is that they usually mutate and change...perplexing us poor humans as to what will be next years most dominant common cold so we can try to make a quick vaccine.

What strikes me is I wonder if this virus has "crossed over" from avian to human...basically mutated, or as nature allows mutated and strengthened on its own..hmm?

I seem to remember reading that back in 2011 or 2012 there was a new Coronavirus found in Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Those crazy nit-wits over there might be playing and formulating a new biological weapon...who knows?

I've always thought if and only if, North Korea attacks the South they'd do some type of chemical or biological weapon first. You know, dirty bomb, suit cases planted around the larger cities.

Viruses to me are fascinating little critters!!!

Just my 2 cents.

Cool!!!

New SARS-Like Coronavirus Suspected at New York Hospital

LONG BEACH, CA--(Marketwired - May 18, 2013) - AvianFluTalk.com, an online discussion forum created in 2005 to track the potential threat of an avian flu pandemic, has been the venue for a serious discussion regarding the new SARS-like coronavirus infecting patients at a New York Hospital leaving several in critical condition and resulting in 3 deaths.

The new SARS-like coronavirus recently emerged in the Middle East infecting 41 total worldwide resulting in 20 deaths and is primarily spread by limited human-to-human transmission. Experts fear that the virus' early ability to transmit among humans could spark a global pandemic should the virus mutate further and achieve sustained human transmission.

Nurses working at a St. Luke's hospital in New York have claimed that there are several cases of the new SARS-like virus in the hospital's ICU, which have gone misdiagnosed and that are in fact the new deadly virus.

A nurse who works at the hospital believes there is a potential outbreak of this new SARS-like virus and she too has now been hospitalized with flu-like symptoms. Although hospital administrators have made no comment about this matter, posters on the online message board at avianflutalk.com have indicated through research that it is influenza B. The nurses are disputing that claim stating that in fact the new coronavirus is the culprit.

The nurses feel that they have an obligation to speak-out about their suspicions in this matter.
