I cleand a few dozen milsurps of cosmoline, and I still miss that smell.

Cosmoline is a good sign..I can't say I really like it though...or the smell for that matter...it ain't like Hoppe's.

My first experience with a 'slow motion' bolt in a Mauser taught me that cosmoline is a liability in cold weather!
