A heat gun and something to catch the hot, melted goo also works very nicely. Just go easy on the wood or plastic bits on the firearm!

I took the easy way out, I put the M1 stock in the dishwasher and viola! Clean as a whistle and a LOT of dents were no longer existent. It looks great even after several months. Then use BLO on it to make it look original.

I took off all the metal including both upper wood and no warpage at all. I guess it depends on the type and grain of wood?
