One thing I notice is that as more old-title DVD's are re-released, they are being offered with English or English SDH subtitles. This is a real big boon to folks who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

Thank you Hollywood!!

I have the original DVD of the 1983 ABC mini-series, The Day After, without subtitles and I just ordered it withe English subtitles. Same with On the Beach and The Stand, among others.

Like I say, they really help folks like me.

I'm with you my friend,,,

When I see a DVD on Netflix,,,
The first thing I do is check to see if it has close captioning.

BTW, I don't think it's Hollywood doing it,,,
I believe there's a federal mandate to close caption all new DVD's.

Some small thing in the Americans with Disabilities Act.

No; the federal (FCC) mandate is for the DVD players to be CC-enabled, and that would work for me except that the AV inlet on my TV is dicked up. Since HDMI is digital and CC's are analog, there has to be another route for the hearing-impaired and that is subtitles that are activated from the disk menu.

However, if I get the cochlear implants, that might just fix the problem.
