We actually have a dedicated generator for our well. We are 3/10 mile from our well and 129' above the water table with the house up on a bluff. What we have learned after 30 years living here is that when power fails, we can power our home with a backup generator I hook up in an outbuilding and backfeed the main breaker panel after shutting the main off. The well is on a seperate meter/feed so to get water back up to the house a separate generator has to be used. We don't leave it running, just long enough to fill water containers and get some reserve. We keep several cases of bottled water around for drinking that gets used and replaced, so that is enough to keep us for a week or longer. We take water from the pool with a pump and fill the garden tub in the bathroom so we can bucket water out of there for flushing toilets. Our water is so hard, the double check valve system I added to the well pump doesn't seal completely which turned out to be a good thing when those temps got down to -14 degrees. We were in South Tx at the time and our system had drained back so nothing froze. Country living at it's finest! One just has to learn to adjust and adapt.
