Once, before a trip into the wilderness where both black bears and grizzlies could be encountered, I had to sit through an orientation by the ranger on the dangers of camping in bear country.

He explained how to avoid attracting bears to camp and that as an extra safety measure, we should carry pepper spray and tie a bell to our shoes. The bell alerts the bears to human presence and the pepper spray was one of the best deterrants should the bear get too close or threaten an attack.

He showed pics of the two different kinds of bears in the area and showed tracks to help identify the animal frequenting the area. He explained that one could also look at the scat and if it contained twigs and berry seeds and it has peculiar pungent odor the bear nearby was likely a black bear and relatively harmless unless cornered or protecting a cub. One of our fellow campers raised her hand and asked "What about grizzly scat?" and without missing a beat the ranger replied "Grizzly scat usually contains little bells an smells like pepper spray."
