just wondering does the 7.62x54r atually kick that hard, i kinda figured it would be less than the recoil of a .30 06

Definitely depends upon the ammo.

I'm shooting everything from a Light Ball Czech round to Heavy Ball Bulgarian, and there's very much a difference, especially out of an M44.

I think my bullet weight variance is between 147 grains to about 200 grains.

Wearing a recoil pad of some sort will also improve your accuracy, as you'll be looking at less flinch.

If you reload, Sierra makes a good 150 grain SP for the .311 diameter. I've loaded these on the bottom end with IMR 4895 and gotten great results. Even made the little M44 tame.
