You're issue is going to be that you want a 1500 dollar rifle for 600 bucks or less. And given today's market, that's even less likely to happen. Half the advice you've been given is crap as it doesn't pertain to what you're looking for. I get the scope is not included in the budget so there's no need to address that. Check pawn shops for what you're looking for. Find a gun you like. It doesn't need to weight 7 or 15 pounds. It doesn't have to have a 10 round detachable magazine. Just whatever you like. My advise for a first gun is to stay away from magnums, they will teach you bad habits.
