My fly fishing Sensei taught me a long time ago- the fish doesn't know if you are using a $2000 Sage setup or a cane pole with the line wound around a tin can. I started with a $39.95 Zebco Combo from the Stroud outlet mall that got blown away in the tornado 25 years ago. He gave me the following advice: Go to Bass Pro or Cabelas. Pick the cheapest 9 5wt COMBO they have. A lot of times they will run specials online. Make sure the combo has the line and backing. Use it as a beginner's rod. It should be easily under $200. Don't get caught up in money. Yet.... If you like it, then you can spend hundreds/thousands in gear like I did. If you don't like it, you aren't out a lot. I will give casting lessons for free if you would like. I mean, it's not completely free, you will have to buy me a cup of coffee. The highlight of my life- fast forward to 2018, Gunnison River in October. I guided my son to this fish. I had given him the rod in the picture for his birthday the week before. He tied the fly that he caught the fish on. Although I will fish for the rest of my life and I've caught bigger fish, this is the only one I remember.
