This is the single shot cousin to the Model 87.
This has the metal buttplate, the shrouded front sight and has had the rear peep sight at one time as evidenced by the inlet for it on the stock.

I would guess this one dates to the mid to late 1930s.

Oh, and of course I didn't pay full price either. :hey3:

I have the date for this rifle narrowed down to 1937-1941.

It looks like the Model 83 was made from 1935 to 1941. From 1935-1936 the fore end was grooved.
