Once upon a half-century ago [now, you KNOW there's gonna be a problem when I start out that way!] I was selected in some magic manner (chanting, scattering chicken bones, something) for jury duty in a murder case. The prosecutor sought the death penalty, so I explained multiple times that I was not qualified to serve. I was honestly not simply trying to shirk civic duty, and offered to substitute service on multiple civil trial juries, or huge numbers of hours of community service. I even offered to assist the clerk's office in the courthouse basement with a large filing project. But I stated - as clearly and definitively as I could - that I am not smart enough or educated enough or wise enough to make that kind of a decision (even in a group of jurors) regarding another person's life! My argument fell on deaf ears. OK, a$$holes... During the final selection process, the assistant DA asked if I had "any preconceived ideas" about the case. I looked puzzled and asked what he meant. He restated, "Are you already convinced about his guilt or innocence?" I did my best impression of a "well duh!" moment, and said "Of course, he's guilty. He's black, ain't he?" I was physically escorted out of the building! And I have never been selected to another jury in all that time. They shoulda listened up front! [Coincidentally, I think the DA's name was Black! ]
